Eyelash Extension

WHAT ARE EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Eyelash extensions are synthetic eyelashes made of a special type of polyester fiber.  They are attached to your natural lashes using a special adhesive made for this procedure.

HOW LONG DO EYELASH EXTENSIONS LAST?

This depends on how many extensions are applied to your natural eyelashes.  The more lash extensions you have on, the longer it lasts.  A full set on average will retain about half the amount at three to four weeks. At this time, you will need to have them refilled.  If you don’t replace the extensions that have fallen off, the remaining false lashes will continue to shed over time.  By the end of 5 – 8 weeks, all the original lash extensions will be gone.

A ‘Natural Set’ will look good for approximately 2 – 2.5 weeks and be completely gone by 4 weeks. These are averages only. Some clients experience better retention while others do not. Factors include the strength and texture of your natural lash, your lifestyle, and the way you care for your Eyelash Extensions.

ARE EYELASH EXTENSIONS SAFE?

When applied by a skilled and properly trained eyelash technician, lash extensions are very safe! Originating from Korea more than 20 years ago, the industry continues to improve with better quality products and techniques.  There are very few risks associated with this service,  the two most concerning are an infection and allergic reaction.

RISK OF INFECTION

It is very important to choose a clean, reputable salon to avoid any risk of infection or cross contamination.  In Toronto and surrounding GTA, all spas and salons are required to have their green Bodysafe inspection certificate in plain sight.  Make sure to ask for this if you do not see it.

Other things to look out for:

make sure your artist is using a fresh set of tweezers on you.  Not just the same pair that was quickly sprayed with alcohol right after the last client.  Public Health requires all tools and implements be washed thoroughly with detergent and then disinfected for a prescribed amount of time.  This means each service provider should have many sets of tools on rotation, not just one set.

all synthetic lashes should be new and dispensed only for you.  Any remaining lash extensions that are not used during the procedure should be discarded.  Take note to see whether your artist pulled out fresh lashes and put on a clean tray just for you, or from the same tray of lashes used for the previous client and then put away for the next client.

freshly cleaned natural lashes is a must prior to application.  Be wary if your artist begins lashing without first requiring them to be washed with a cleanser.

RISK OF ALLERGIC REACTION

As with any product on the market, there is a very small chance of an allergic reaction. (approx. 1%). With a true allergic reaction, swelling of the eyes will occur within the first 48 hours. Please contact US and we will remove the extensions free of charge for you ASAP.  Once removed, the swelling will dissipate within a few days, and your eyes will be back to normal without any damage to either your eyes or lashes.

This depends on how many extensions are applied to your natural eyelashes.  The more lash extensions you have on, the longer it lasts.  On average,  for a full set, you can expect to retain about half the amount at three to four weeks. At this time, you will need to have them refilled.  If you don’t replace the extensions that have fallen off, the remaining false lashes will continue to shed over time.  By the end of 5 – 8 weeks, all the original lash extensions will be gone.

DO LASH EXTENSIONS CAUSE YOUR NATURAL LASHES TO FALL OUT?

The application of lash extensions, when applied properly by a trained professional, will not cause hair loss, nor will it cause eyelashes to fall out. Remember that your natural lashes have their own life cycle of growth and shedding just like the hair found elsewhere on your body. It’s hard to notice small lashes falling out, but when attached to a thicker, longer lash they become much more noticeable! Once the extensions are removed, your own eyes may appear smaller, your natural lashes, shorter and more sparse because you’ve been accustomed to a full set of longer, thicker lashes.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

For the first 24 hours, do not get your lashes wet, avoid the shower (take a warm bath instead), steam rooms, massages, facials, tanning, and sweaty workouts. You can wash your face, however, use a face cloth to rinse around the eye area.

AFTER 24 HOURS: We recommend that you refrain from eye make-up as much as you can (as your new lashes will make your eyes really stand out!) since the oils from eyeshadow and liners will break down the bond. When you do wear eye makeup, use alint-free applicator and oil-free makeup remover to keep the skin around your eyes clean. Liquid liner is preferred over pencil and powder as it is not as greasy and easier to cleanse. We sell and recommend Geisha Ink liners which are oil free, streak free, and cleans off easily.

The NO-NO’s: no curling your lashes, no waterproof mascara, no smooshing your face on your pillow, & no eye masks. We do carry a mascara made especially for eyelash extensions, ask your technician for details if interested, however, we feel the extensions alone are pretty enough without the mascara. Use a face cloth to wash your face (instead of splashing) – also great for a gentle daily exfoliation. Avoid the direct spray in the shower. They’re waterproof, but not jet-spray-in-your-face-proof. Use a headband when you’re hitting the gym or working up a sweat. This prevents sweat from dripping into your eyes. You can exercise as usual, but please note the bond of the extensions weaken with excessive sweat and oils, therefore those who engage in high cardio workouts, as well as hot yoga, will notice a compromise in the life of the extensions.

IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD DO TO PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?

Yes! Try your best to arrive without any eye makeup, do not curl your lashes or wear mascara the day before and the day of your appointment. This will minimize the ‘cleanup’ time and allow more time to apply extensions.

WHO SHOULD NOT WEAR EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Eyelash Extensions may not be suitable for people who:

– Have pre-existing eyelid or eye conditions such as blepharitis and ocular rosacea

– Want a very heavy mascara look but do not have the natural lashes to support it

– Have a condition called Trichotillomania, which is hair loss resulting from compulsive pulling or twisting of the hair, brows or in this case, eyelashes

– Are in chlorinated water many times a week

– Cannot control rubbing their eyes

– Have had recent eye or eyelid surgery within the past four weeks

– Have had any type of invasive treatment around the eye or face area within last few weeks

– Have never had extensions before (or not for a while), and you are pregnant or nursing

– Have allergies to or have had a reaction to acrylate products including acrylic nails

PLEASE DO NOT HAVE THEM APPLIED IF THERE IS ANY EXISTING TYPE OF IRRITATION TO YOUR EYES OR THE SKIN SURROUNDING IT.

DO YOU RECOMMEND LASH EXTENSIONS FOR MY WEDDING OR TRAVEL?

Yes! Eyelash Extensions will allow you the freedom of looking beautiful without the fuss! No more worrying about runny mascara! However, if you’ve never tried it before you should have them applied at least 4 days before you leave for travel, just in case you happen to fall into the small percentage of those who may have a reaction. For brides, we recommend you come in and try NATURAL set, at least a month before your big day to decide on the look you want and to rule out any possible irritation. And then book a FULL set a few days prior to your big day.
